ADVISORY: How the U.S. Military is Responding to Sea Level Rise

WASHINGTON, DC–The White House and U.S. Military have continued to raise alarms about the serious and direct risks of climate change-related impacts to local communities and military installations.

On Wednesday, October 19, at 9:30 a.m. EDT, World Resources Institute and Old Dominion University will host a media event, Sea Level Rise: An Intergovernmental Blueprint for Community Resiliency, featuring White House and military leaders, including David Adams, Director for Health Security and Climate Resilience Policy for the White House National Security Council, and Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations & Environment, Vice Admiral Dennis V. McGinn, among others.

Speakers will discuss the importance of addressing climate change and outline concrete examples of how sea level rise and other climate impacts are threatening our military operations and coastal communities. The panel will also discuss key findings and recommendations from a first-of-its-kind pilot project launched by the White House in Hampton Roads, VA, bringing together the Department of Defense and US Navy to build resilience to sea level rise and other threats of climate change in the backyard of the world’s largest Naval Base.
